Hi, friends! As you probably know, the goal of The Homeschooler’s Chat is to help homeschoolers find friends. For several years, we’ve worked on building an incredible discussion-based community here on Discord. It’s been so fun to expand in this way and adventure through this format together!
Since 2018, we’ve expanded our Discord server to host over 50 text channels (that’s a lot). We’ve covered everything from fashion to college preparation in our dedicated education, hobby, and interest channels. We’ve become a known spot to check into for quick chat with others!
But, we don’t want to lose sight of what we’re here for. We’re shifting our focus back toward simply being a hub for making friends rather than general chatting. We’ll be completely redoing our channel setup to bring our core goal of creating friendships to the forefront.
This means we’re moving from a general chatting space to a place where you hop in to find peers with similar interests. We’ll still have great areas for you to interact with others by getting involved with game nights, art events, in-chat games, and more. The key difference you’ll find is that once you hit it off with another user, you’ll likely want to chat with them one-on-one! We’re here to get you started and help to plant the seed of friendship so YOU can water it and watch it grow.
Many channels are retiring 💤
The Homeschooler’s Chat’s Discord sever will be a dedicated hub for finding friends, getting basic assistance with homeschooling, and finding resources! To do this, we’ll be pruning back the amount of topic-specific channels we have. Specific interest and hobby channels will be replaced with one place to chat about all of your favorite things.
Which channels will remain and which will be retired is an ongoing process. We will be making changes as the community adjusts, to best fit HSRC’s needs. All changes will be shared in the news channel of our Discord server.
Why is this change being made? 🤔
When The Homescholer’s Chat began in 2014, our singular objective was to help homeschooling teenagers find friends. Before we moved to Discord, that was very much our focus. Since migrating, we’ve become more of a casual chatting space. Having a nice place for small talk is so fun, but our specialty lies in growing friendships.
For our staff, managing a large space is a lot of work! By bringing our focus to a smaller amount of channels (rather than 50+) our staff team will have an easier time helping out in chat. Ensuring every user’s safety and comfort is our top priority. With fewer channels, we’ll avoid spreading our team too thin.
An exciting future ☀️
This is a change that I’m very excited for, as it focuses us on my original vision for The Homeschooler’s Chat. Keeping our space more focused is a thrilling chance to really bring in the cozy vibes and help to keep our space from becoming overwhelming. We hope you enjoy continuing to find friends and participating fun events here in HSRC!
Frequently Asked Questions ❓
What is happening?
We’re basically jumping into a digital minimalist style. Less channels, same activities and vibes.
Where can I talk with fellow homeschoolers in HSRC’s Discord server?
While we will no longer have a “general chat”, you can jump into the friend-making, activity-based, or education-centered channels to connect with peers.
Will there still be events?
Absolutely! Events are a key part of getting to know the community. Our schedule has not changed, but the community will be notified if changes are set to occur.
What if I feel nervous about this?
We get it! Change is not easy. HSRC isn’t going anywhere, we’re just metamorphosizing into a new and improved setup. We’re still here for you as a community.
How can I voice my questions about this?
There is a thread within our news channel which is dedicated to this change. Please direct all questions to this thread, so we can stay organized and see your thoughts easily. We ask for patience and understanding during this transition.
“I hate it!”
We understand! Luckily, this is simply a layout change in a Discord server. Again, our community is not disappearing. We’re just getting our 2025 glow-up started.
