About HSRChat, the online community where home educated students and teenagers make friends

What is HSRChat?
“HSRChat” stands for The Homeschooler’s Chat, also known as “HSRC”
The Homeschooler’s Chat, founded by a homeschooler named Anne in 2014, is the largest Discord server dedicated to helping homechoolers, unschoolers, and other non-traditional-schoolers find friends online.
Often called simply “HSRChat” or “HSRC”, The Homeschooler’s Chat helps students feel supported, safe, and heard in a space full of their peers. Despite being the largest Discord server for unschooling and homeschooling students, HSRChat feels like a familiar group chat between friends thanks to the kind and welcoming atmosphere upheld by all students and members.

Anne

It’s me, author of the website! During my homeschooling journey I found one thing to be the toughest: making friends. I started HSRC in January of 2014 as a way to help my peers connect with each other and find community online.
Now I maintain HSRC as my passion project. I juggle website design, Discord server maintenance, social media posts, planning events, and keeping the community safe, all with the support of our Discord server staff and the amazing community in HSRC. Thanks for being here!

Bun

Bun first joined our group in 2018 and has been an essential part of our community ever since! If you’ve joined our server, you were most likely greeted by Bun upon arrival. Bun’s kind personality and attention to detail make Bun an incredible moderator and friend. You can often find Bun offering encouragement and advice to our community in our art and animal-focused spaces.

Everyone is so nice and welcoming. You can interact with the community, or just relax and hang out, nobody judges you for just being on. I like that, no pressure to try and please people.

Who can join HSRChat?
All teenagers are welcome to join HSRC’s Discord server for homeschoolers, unschoolers, online students, and students in general. HSRChat was created for unschooling and homeschooling students. However, the goal of The Homeschooler’s Chat is simply to help teenagers find friends.
Whethere you are homeschooling, unschooling, learning remotely, going to school in-person, considering homeschooling, or entirely unsure where you are right now in your journey, you can always join The Homeschooler’s Chat Discord server to find support and friends online.

What does HSRChat do?
HSRChat is the easiest and safest way for homeschooling and unschooling students to connect with their peers on Discord. Unschoolers and homeschoolers can get to know each other and create new friendships through game nights, monthly art challenges, studying sessions, collaborative drawing events, talent shows, karaoke, Dungeons & Dragons, and more.
The Discord server for homeschoolers and unschoolers goes above and beyond when it comes to user experience. Apart from the events happening in the Discord community, we also enrich the quality of our space with unique content based on HSRC’s mascot, Harold.

Who is HSRChat’s Mascot?
Harold Samamor Roberts is the mascot of The Homeschooler’s Chat (HSRChat, HSRC). Harold is a Sprout Sprite from the Enchanted Forest! Harold, like members of HSRC, is a homeschooler himself. Harold has a vast amount of background and history for members of HSRChat’s Discord server to dive into.
Through Harold, students in The Homeschooler’s Chat’s Discord server are able to connect over a shared topic. Harold is a unique creature, which allows homeschoolers and unschoolers in HSRC to share in a special experience by learning about him. Thanks to Harold, there is always something to chat about in our Discordd server.

From HSRChat’s Founder: Our Story
From an idea to a reality, with Anne.
Having friends that you can relate to is an important part of being a teenager. It’s an important part of being a human.
In The Homeschooler’s Chat we believe that everyone deserves to have a safe community that they can rely on and feel supported by.
🌱 January 2014

HSRC Launch
As a homeschooler myself, I was feeling alone and disconnected from others my age. I knew I couldn’t be the only one feeling that way. After all, I wasn’t the first kid to learn from home for much of my life. In January of 2014 I created the first iteration of The Homeschooler’s Chat website as a simple site with a tiny chat forum. A handful of teenagers joined. Each and every one of them echoed what I had been feeling: alone.
🌿 January 2018

Migration to Discord
With encouragement and advice from these newfound allies I migrated HSRC from an in-website chat room to a Discord server, as suggested by one of our members. I hoped to create a better, more organized space for our fellow homeschoolers to connect online. I had no idea just how much there was in store for this community and how many incredible individuals we would find along the way.
🌸 2024 to Present Day

Flourishing & Growing
Watching this group of one-time strangers come together to create such a kind and welcoming community has been a privilege that I would not trade for the world. Thank you for being here and thank you for sharing in our journey. I can’t wait to see where we head next.
