Geotastic: Google Street View Fun

Geotastic is a location guessing game based in Google Street View. This project was created by Edutastic Games as a financially accessible alternative to similar games, which often greet users with a paywall. This game is made possible through crowdfunding and ad revenue.

Here’s how the game works, as explained by Sergei, an HSRC community member:

First, you see an image of, most often, a street, road, or path. In most cases, you can use your mouse to look around and move down the street. By finding and analyzing clues such as language, landscape, architecture, license plates, or signs, you have to try and guess the location as close as possible on an in-game map.

There are various settings you can explore and change by yourself: two settings options are the time limit for guessing and number of rounds per game. While most maps used to play are made using official Google Maps Street View, which not all countries have for the moment, you can still find some maps which do include unofficial Street View images.

Geotastic is one of the most fun ways you can learn about the geography of our planet, right from your home. This game teaches you about how the world looks by exposing you to new, exciting locations. You can expand your knowledge in many ways, such as by learning about different landscapes, vegetation, as well as cultural aspects of human life, like architecture or the use of symbols such as flags and coats of arms!

With Geotastic, you can both choose to explore the entire world or to concentrate on a specific continent or country. There are many different interesting game modes you can choose from, such as country, city or capital guessing, flag guessing or even guessing popular landmarks! You can find different maps made by other users: some examples of themes for these maps are coins from around the world, old flags, the shapes of different countries, and many other interesting maps you can play.

• Make sure you have a computer to play Geotastic on, as this game is not compatible with mobile devices.

• Start by grabbing the @Geotastic role in the Channels & Roles tab at the top of the channel list in The Homeschooler’s Chat’s Discord server.

• When an event is planned, you’ll get a notification with information ahead of time.

• Join voice chat, even if you prefer to keep your mic off, which won’t impact your ability to enjoy this event.

• Hop into the Geotastic lobby! A link will be provided during the event. You don’t have to have an account to play.

• Ask questions if you’re unsure how the game works.

• Have fun! These events typically last for about 2 hours, so there’s lots of time to practice, even if you’re entirely new to this style of game.
