Who keeps the community safe?

Anne

It’s me, author of the website! I started The Homeschooler’s Chat in January of 2014 as a homeschooling student wanting to create a way to help my peers connect with each other and find community online. Through my own time homeschooling, I knew one aspect was the hardest of all for students: making friends.
Now, I’m twentysomething and maintain HSRC as my passion project. I put my heart and soul into website design, Discord server maintenance, social media posts, planning events, and keeping the community safe. I do it all with support from our Discord server staff and the amazing community in HSRC. Thanks for being here!

Bun

Bun first joined our group in 2018 and has been an essential part of our community ever since! If you’ve joined our server, you were most likely greeted by Bun upon arrival. Bun’s kind personality and attention to detail make Bun an incredible moderator and friend. You can often find Bun offering encouragement and advice to our community in our art and animal-focused spaces.

Max

Max has been a big part of The Homeschooler’s Chat community since mid-2018. He returned after a hiatus to help our team keep the Discord server a fun and safe space for everyone! He really enjoys programming and is also a huge art lover. Max has helped assemble tips for college and adult life which you can find on our blog!

Potato

TheLightlySaltedPotato (aka Potato) found our group in January of 2019, and we’re so lucky that he did! Thanks to Potato’s keen eye, our community has been a space free of chaos and drama.
With a great ear for a good melody, he often shares new music recommendations with us, along with honest advice and even some of his own art!

From Our Founder: Our Journey

From an idea to a reality, with Anne.

  • 2013 – The Idea

The question a homeschooler hears most is, “how do you make friends?”
Some of us are part of co-ops. Some of us take classes at local museums or colleges. These opportunities make it easier to meet new people and create new friendships despite our alternative learning style. However, many of us don’t have a means of making new connections with our peers. Those of us who travel frequently or live in an area without in-person homeschool groups often feel we’re left behind socially.

I was homeschooled for elementary and high school
, so I understand first-hand how hard it can be to make new friends when your home is your school. Finding friends as a teenager can be a stuggle, but it is even more difficult for a homeschooled teen. Add on that many teenagers aren’t able to drive yet and thus unable to head out to meet peers, and it starts to feel like a nearly impossible task! That’s what brings us here.

  • 2014 – HSRC Launch

As a homeschooler myself, I was feeling alone and disconnected from others my age. I knew I couldn’t be the only one feeling that way. After all, I wasn’t the first kid to learn from home for much of my life. In January of 2014 I created the first iteration of The Homeschooler’s Chat website as a simple site with a tiny chat forum. A handful of teenagers joined. Each and every one of them echoed what I had been feeling: alone.

  • 2018 – Move to Discord

With encouragement and advice from these newfound allies, I moved The Homeschooler’s Chat from an in-website chat platform to a Discord server. The goal: create a better, more organized space for our fellow homeschoolers to connect online. Today our humble group has grown into a thriving community, full of members with different interests and talents. Every day our users find comfort knowing they are not alone on their homeschooling journey. Our members learn from each other and help each other through the obstacles we face in day-to-day homeschooling life, which is just what they’ve needed all this time.

  • 2024 – Flourishing & Growing

Watching this group of one-time strangers come together to create such a kind and welcoming community has been a privilege that I would not trade for the world. Thanks to our members harboring a positive environment, I have received messages and emails over the years from kids and parents sharing with me just how much our community has helped their homeschooling experience and changed the game when it comes to homeschooling as a teenager. I invite you to join us, and see for yourself just what a wonderful place we’ve created in the past ten years.

  • What HSRC Taught Me

Having friends that you can relate to is an important part of being a teenager. It’s an important part of being a human.
Not having people your age to connect with can be difficult and harmful to the mental and emotional health of any individual, regardless of age. Those of us in The Homeschooler’s Chat believe that everyone deserves to have a friendly community that they can rely on and feel supported by. While our online homeschool group won’t single-handedly solve all of our problems, it sure does help. Thank you for being here and thank you for sharing in our journey. I can’t wait to see where we head next.

    Love, Anne

Our Environment

A Deeper Look At HSRC. Use the menus below to learn more about us.

Staying Safe

Comfort and safety are our number one priorities in The Homeschooler’s Chat. Our staff team keeps a watchful eye out for any disruptive behavior or content within our Discord server and nips any unwelcome material in the bud right away. The Homeschooler’s Chat users have easy and quick access to private contact with our staff members to report any concerning situations. Thanks to our community’s keen eye and our staff’s delicate handling of moderation cases, HSRC maintains a drama-free, stress-free environment at all times.

Maintaining Positivity

The Homeschooler’s Chat is defined by our positive and friendly community. Both long-term and new members of HSRC find comfort in the reliability of our core values: kindness and safety. Students, alumni, and staff alike take our policy of kindness to heart, and it shows in their interactions with each other. Whether fellow students are assisting each other with difficult homework assignments, gathering for our community game nights, offering heartfelt advice to one another, or having a casual chat in our Discord server, the genuine and empathetic nature of our community shines through in their actions.

Students and Alumi

Each individual in The Homeschooler’s Chat contributes to our community being what it is: a warm and inviting place for teenagers in search of friends. Since HSRC’s creation in 2014, we have been lucky enough to have students graduate during their time in our group. These special members are referred to as our “alumni”, and round-out our community with their presence, advice, and guidance for those who are still schooling. Whether our users have been in with us since 2018 or 2023, there is always and will always be a place for them in The Homeschooler’s Chat.
